Revelation, Chapter 7

This is part of a study on the book of Revelation.

Revelation 7 deals with the 144,000 witnesses. This chapter is a parenthesis, an interlude, between the 6th and the 7th seal.

People get confused when reading the book of Revelation, because it is not in chronological order. However, there is an order when the judgements are unfolding, and it goes like this:

Tribulation Judgements

Revelation 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

“And after these things,” referring to the first six seals, a universal calm on earth. It is so still, not a leaf on the trees moves. A profound quietness, before the impending ruin.

Revelation 7:2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea. 3. Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

The word “seal” comes from a Greek word that means “to stamp with a private mark.” The sealing here has to do with a group of people who gets the seal of God, for protection, during the tribulation.

These four angels were commanded to suspend the work of destruction until the servants of God could be rendered secure. Calamities are being held in suspension. That is to say, hovering on the border, but not allowed to proceed, not yet.

Revelation 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

Every one who get the seal, are from the house of Israel. That is: 12 Tribes x 12,000 Men from each tribe = Total of 144,000.

Revelation 7:5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. 6. Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nephtalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. 7. Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. 8.Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

The twelve tribes of Israel are the twelve sons of Jacob. Scripture sometimes use the sons of Jospeh interchangeable.

(Rachel’s maid)
(Jacob’s wife)
(Jacob’s wife)
(Rachel’s maid)
(son of Joseph)
(son of Joseph)

Son’s of Jacob – Twelve Tribes

Note! This is the time of the restoration of the kingdom to Israel, and the Jews shall at last say “Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord.” See more End Times, Israel.

The tribe of Dan is not mentioned. In the time of Joshua they received an allotment, a land that belonged to the Philistines. They rebelled and went north, instead of being committed to God’s plan. Instead of conquering, they ran away. But, Dan will have a portion of land in the Millennial kingdom. Ezekiel 48:1 “There are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan will have one portion.”
Also, the tribe of Levite had priestly duties, and no tribal allotment in the land.

Revelation 7:9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.

“After this” refers to the things that comes after the previous things. “And lo” as in behold, something important is following. “A great multitude” here is not the Church, that is Jew and Gentile who trusted in Christ before the Rapture. The identity of this “multitude” is revealed further down in chapter 7.

Revelation 7:10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11. And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12. Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

Every being in heaven is worshipping God.

Revelation 7:13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14. And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

John is being asked about the “multitude”, the ones in the white robes. “Made white in the blood of the Lamb” refers to those who are washed in the blood of the Lamb, those who accepted the Gospel.”

“These are those coming out of the great tribulation.” In Greek the present tense is used “these are those coming out”, not all at once, but gradually. It refers to Gentiles who turns to Christ, after the Rapture. They are martyred for their faith during the Great Tribulation, the Tribulation saints. They are part of the final harvest of souls during the Tribulation.

Revelation 7:15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.
Revelation 7:16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

They are with God and safe. We read in 1 John 1:5 “God is Light”. Thus, before the throne is God’s light, not the light from the sun.

Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

John 4:14 “Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” They are now in His very presence, no lack, no tears.

Jesus Christ is sitting at the right hand of God throughout the New Testament. But, in the book of Revelation the Lamb, Jesus Christ, is in the midst of the throne. He is moving to bring about the fulfilment of God’s plan.

It is worthy to understand the reasons for the Tribulation Period. This will help you to understand why there is a Rapture before it starts.

  • It is a time of evangelisation of the Jewish people.
  • It is a time to bring an end to Gentile world powers.
  • It is a time to bring the defeat of the satanic trinity: Satan, Antichrist, and the False prophet.

Also, consider Daniel’s prophecy of 70 weeks, that is 490 years. The Church was not in the 483 years before the parenthesis. Or, the 1 week, that is 7 years, after the parenthesis. The Church is the parenthesis. See more End Times, the scope.

The End.
