Revelation, Chapter 16

This is part of a study on the book of Revelation

Revelation 16 is all about the seven vials, the last of twenty-one plagues. Until now, seven seals opened, and seven trumpets blew. On this note, we left of into a detour at Revelation 11:4 “The second woe is past. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.”

The 3rd woe is here! The detour lasted from Revelation 12-15, and it is over now.

These last seven plagues, the vials, are an accumulation of plagues. They don’t happen one after the other. But, while the earth dwellers are struggling with one plague, the next one comes pouring out.

When the trumpets blew, the plagues destroyed a third of the earth, a third of the sea, and a third of the fresh water. The vials bring a complete destruction.

I have mentioned in Revelation, Chapter 8 how similar these plagues are to those that happened in Egypt during the exodus.

Remember, the book of Revelation is John recording and describing what he saw in a vision.

Revelation 16:1 And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

The “great voice out of the temple” must be the voice of God, because no one could enter the temple in Revelation 15:8. The “shekinah” glory of God filled the Temple.

It is God Himself that instructed the horrific last seven judgment.

Revelation 16:2 And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.

We red in Revelation 13 about those who received the “mark of the beast” on their right hand, or forehead. Furthermore, the same people worshipped the statue of the Beast.

These earth dwellers who submitted to the Beast, and the Beast system, are now breaking out in horrible and malignant sores.

Revelation 16:3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

The sea changed colour, and it smelled sickening. It became like the blood in a dead body. Every living creature in it died.

Revelation 8:8-9 described a partial contamination of the sea. Here, it is complete contamination.

Revelation 16:4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.

All fresh water became blood. Every tap runs blood. There is not a drop of fresh water left for human consumption.

Revelation 8:10-11 described a partial contamination of fresh waters. But, here it completed the contamination.

Note! Many Bible scholars believe the vial judgments happen towards the end of the Tribulation. The human race cannot survive long with ecological disasters such as this.

Revelation 16:5 And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. 6 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.

Those who delighted in the shedding of blood will get plenty of it. In fact, wherever they look is only blood.

Note! I want to steer clear of the sensational. But, I have to mention here the dark and sinister plans of the powerful to shed blood. This include human sacrifice, child sacrifice, and the sacrifice of a foetus. See more Abortion, human sacrifice

An angel proclaimed God is just in sending these judgments. Through the ages many have died at the hands of another. The first was the blood of Abel who died at the hands of his brother Cain. Genesis 4:10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.”

Revelation 16:7 And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgements.

Another voice spoke, probably another angel, to proclaim again God is true and righteous in sending these judgements.

God is willing to forgive. See What about sin? He is long suffering and slow to punish, but at this stage we had those on earth who hardened their hearts. They refused to repent.

Revelation 16:8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.

The real climate change! The sun became so hot that it scorched humanity.

Peter wrote about this. See 2 Peter 3:10 “…and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.” My tip! I cannot see you and me doing this with our hair spray!

Revelation 16:9 And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

It is astonishing that after all this divine discipline, men did not repent. They hardened their hearts.

Note! We often think that if only people knew God exist for sure, they will repent. It is not the case. These people knew these plagues are from God, it is not natural, and yet, they do not repent.

Revelation 16:10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain, 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

The real climate change continues. They had too much of the sun, and now there is no sun at all. It became dark on earth, and so cold, for there was not a single ray of sun shine.

Note! This darkness is a preview of hell itself. Jesus referred to hell as the outer darkness. See Matthew 25:30. The earth dwellers are standing on the shore of hell, and did not repent.

The earth dwellers were still minding their sores. Here we can see there were no time for recovery. The vials poured out, on top of each other.

Revelation 16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

The work of the “unholy spirit” is that of full fledged deception. It prepared the leaders of the East for the battle of Armageddon.

Note! The “unholy Trinity” is the pseudo Trinity. It consists of:

Unholy Father– SatanGod the Father
Unholy Son– AntichristGod the Son
Unholy Spirit– False ProphetGod the Holy Spirit
The unholy trinity

Revelation 16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of the great day of God Almighty.

The “unholy spirit” has already deceived the leaders of the East, see verse 12-13. Now, it goes to work to deceive the leaders of the rest of the world. This battle is not nation against nation, but the united nations of the whole world against God almighty.

Like in the days of the “Tower of Babel”, the world once again united against God.

Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

John wrote about those wore the robe of righteousness, believers. In contrast to those who were without it, who were naked.

Note! The robe of righteousness is the wedding garment of believers in Christ. It is the blood of the Lamb. We are right with God, because of what Jesus Christ did on our behalf at the cross. See Crucifixion, why so bloody?

Believers who expected the second coming, and prepared for it, were not surprised by it. But, unbelievers got a bad surprise.

I referred above to Peter who wrote about the day the earth will melt. In the same verse he wrote: 2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night…”

Revelation 16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Those who were deceived by the “unholy spirit” and who did not wear a robe of righteousness, are gathered for the battle at Armageddon.

Note! When we talk about Armageddon, it is a physical place in Israel, called the valley of Megiddo. Also, Armageddon refers to one moment in time. It is one battle at the end of the seven year Tribulation period.

Revelation 16:17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

This is the last of the seven vials, and the last of the twenty- one plagues.

When Jesus was nailed to the cross to do His redemption word, His last words were: “It is finished.” See John 19:30. Now, when the Lord is finished with His judgement work, His last words are: “It is done.”

Note! Remember we saw in Revelation 1, God who was, who is, and who is forever.

  • God who created everything and everyone
  • God who did the redemption work
  • God who will come to judge

Revelation 16:18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upont he earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. 19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

The grand finale of the plagues came with a huge earthquake, thunder, lightning, and hail. At this moment the great city, Jerusalem, split into three parts. The cities of the nations fell.

Mountains “were brought low” by this enormous earthquake. See Isiah 40:4. And, islands to disappear into the sea.

Revelation 16:21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphmemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague whereof was exeeding great.

The last drop of the 7th vial came down on the earth. Huge hail stones of approximately 32.3 kg or 71 lb 3 oz. were pummelling away.

The settling of the tale of the two cities, Jerusalem and Babylon arrived, and then comes Armageddon. See the next chapters.

The End.
