Revelation, Chapter 13

This is part of a Bible study on the book of Revelation.

In Revelation 13, John sees more great signs, two beasts. John saw a vision of the future, and he is recording it faithful for the reader.

In the previous chapter, signs appeared in the sky. But, Satan was thrown out of heaven, and now the scene moves down to earth. Two beasts appear, one comes up from the sea, and one from the earth. You are about to meat the “unholy Trinity”, that is:

Anti-chirstBeast from the Sea
Anti-spiritBeast from the Land
“Unholy Trinity”

The word “anti” in the Greek can mean “the opposite of” or “instead of.” It is important, because people tend to look for a repulsive person as an Antichrist. Instead, the Antichrist will appear as an angel of light. He will be charming, successful, and very likeable.

John wrote in 1 John 2:18 “the Antichrist and many antichrists.” A spirit of antichrist will leads up to the appearance of the end times Antichrist. The one who will lead humanity to unite in a rebellion, against God.

The beasts here can fit both an Empire (kingdom) or an Emperor (its leader). It is noteworthy that the pronouns “he” and “his” are being used in the text, for a person. It might be helpful to see it as both, the same way we say that Nebuchadnezzar was Babylon. And, vice versa.

Revelation 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

John was standing on the sea shore, and he looked at the sea. To a Jew the sea represented instability, a restless mass of human kind, people and multitudes. Out of this instability, came a voracious beast, rising up.

Remember the dragon up in the sky that John saw in Chapter 12? Now, John is looking at something like the dragon, but it is not exactly the same. John calls it a beast.

It is part of the “unholy Trinity”, it is the Antichrist. This beast has seven separate heads, driven by the same satanic spirit. It is a spirit of utter enmity to the rule of the true King, Jesus Christ. It blasphemes the true God.

The crowns the beast was wearing are “diadems” in the Greek. Rulers would wear “diadems”, and those who received an award, a “stefanos.”

Note! The dragon (Satan) had seven crowns upon his heads. But, the beast (Antichrist) ten crowns upon his horns. Same satanic power, but a rotation of power from the heads of the dragon to the horns of the beast.

Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

The Holy Spirit used images from Daniel 7 to connect the reader with the prophecy of Daniel. In a vision, Daniel saw four beasts:

The Daniel Prophecy

Daniel 7:7 “before me was a fourth beast, terrifying and frightening and very powerful.” The last world empire, is a One World Order. It will have the authority of the lion, crush like a bear what is in its way, and go about it catlike and swift, like a leopard.

This beast of an empire will have a beast of a ruler, the Antichrist. He is the one in whom the ruling power of the world is finally concentrated.

Revelation 13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

The historical point of reference for this “wounded head” is Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

This happened at the cross. The seed of the woman, Jesus Christ, bruised the serpent’s head. Satan’s agent, the Antichrist, makes a remarkable recovery which adds to its fame, and its power. Evil rises with new vigour.

Note! The prophet Zechariah wrote a prophecy about this moment in time. He refers to the Antichrist as an “idol shepherd.” Here, in the Greek “idol” refers to idolatry, not being lazy. Zechariah 11:17 “Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.”

Revelation 13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

Both the dragon and the beast are part of the “unholy Trinity.” The people worshipped Satan, also known today as practising Luciferianism. Satan has always been a deceiver, and it may well be that people are being deceived into it.

For a time, the beast appeared powerful, and the world believed he is so mighty that they cannot conquered it.

Revelation 13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.

God allowed the beast the liberty to speak, and to work, unrestrained for 42 months, that is 3.5 years. Thus, the second part of the seven years Tribulation period.

Revelation 13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

The Antichrist spoke gainst God, and those who were caught up in the rapture. See more The Rapture. Those “that tabernacle with Him” in the Greek, refers to those who is now living with the Lord, in heaven.

Revelation 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

The earth dwellers are those whose alliance is on earth. For a short time, the beast brings prosperity and security, he allow people to do what is right in their own eyes. He allows religious freedom. Then comes a day, and he will show his true colours. No more freedom, he forces the world to worship him alone.

Those who come to faith after the Rapture are in danger. The government of the beast will overcome, and kill all those who do not bow in worship to the beast.

Revelation 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear. 10 He that leadth in to captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

Now, a solemn warning to those who work for the beast and lead others into captivity. They themselves will go into captivity.

Revelation 13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.

John saw in his vision another beast, like the first one, but they differ in:

  • Origin. One comes out of the sea, and this one comes out of the earth.
  • Rank. The second beast is subordinate to the first beast. In verse 12 it reads “he causes the earth…. to worship the first beast.”
  • Appearance. The first beast is terrifying and frightening, but the second beast has a mild, “lamb-like” appearance.

This lamb-like one has two horns. It pretends to be mean, but it is not. And, it “spoke like a dragon”, because it is an agent for Satan, it is part of the “Unholy Trinity.”

This second beast is called the False Prophet in later chapters. See Revelation 16:13, 19:20 and 20:10.

Revelation 13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therin to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

The beast rising from the earth prepares the world for the satanic system. It is like a false “John the Baptist.” It functions like a propaganda minister, and leads the world into worshipping the first beast, the Antichrist. Ultimately, worshipping the “unholy Trinity.”

Revelation 13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

The second beast, False Prophet, is doing the signs and wonders to back up his false teaching.

Note! Jesus said in Matthew 24:24 “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive if possible, even the elect.” Paul said in 2 Thessalonians 2:9 “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.”

Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

Satan always envied God, he always wanted the worship that belongs only to God. Now, his time is running out, and he demands worship. Those who refuse are killed.

Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their forehead. 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

The satanic system is one that controls, and there is no freedom in it. It controls the end-time global economy, and global supply and demand.

The mark is a literal mark, or quantum tattoo that will be placed upon the right hand, or forehead of people. Without it, you cannot engage in commerce, and have no life line to buy food, etc.

Note! The technology to do this is in place today.

Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Many a man came under suspicion over the centuries. But, Christians need not to be superstitious about it. John’s writing implies that the understanding of this name and number is attainable.

In the Bible, the number 7 is of completeness. The number 6 is the number of man, minus one, and deficient. The number 666, thus the beast, is three times falling short.
