Revelation 12 is a chapter filled with great signs. The Greek words “mega semeion” refers to a great sign with a meaning, and a concealed idea behind it. Not a mere wonder.
|The Man Child||Jesus|
It is of key importance to understand that Israel plays a major role in the end times. The woman, in Chapter 12, is a representative sign of Israel. Thus, not the Church, and not Mary.
The reasons to support this view:
- Israel is often pictured as a woman in the Old Testament, see Isaiah 54:1-6, and Jeremiah 3:20.
- Israel is also pictured as a woman in travail in the Old Testament, see Micah 4:10 and Isaiah 66:7.
- Bible prophecy refers to Daniel’s people as Israel. Daniel 9:24 “Seventy sevens are decreed for your people.”
- Bible prophecy speaks of Jacob/Israel’s trouble. Jeremiah 30:7 “It will be a time of trouble for Jacob/Israel.”
It cannot be the Church, because:
- Jesus was born from the Jews, the line of Judah. See Matthew 2:2.
- A virgin prepaired for Jesus Christ, and cannot be pregnant. See Corinthians 11:2.
It cannot be Mary, because:
- This woman will flee into the desert for 3.5 years during the Tribulation period. See Revelation 12:6.
THE MAN CHILD
Revelation 12 stretches in history from Genesis (the beginning), to Revelation (the end times.) In Genesis 3:15 the promise of “the seed of the women” that will crush Satan’s, was given. That promise went into fulfilment when Jesus was born. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born…. and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God.
THE NATION, ISRAEL
The rest of God’s promises was made to Israel. It is the foundation for the conflict of the ages, Satan versus Israel. The prerequisite condition to the second coming of Jesus Christ has everything to do with Israel. They will be in the promised land, they will repent, and they will ask the Messiah to return. Hosea 5:15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.
This is why Satan is so determined to remove the Jews of the face of the earth. If there is no Israel to return to, God will not be keeping His promises, He will be a liar.
Note! I do want to stress that Satan is no opponent to our Lord, Jesus Christ. At no time will there be a battle between God and Satan. God doesn’t fight. He just wins!

SIGN IN HEAVEN
Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
Bible interprets Bible. Their is one other place in the Bible where we find the same imagery. The sun, moon, and twelve stars appeared in Joseph’s dream. Genesis 37:9-11 “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
In Joseph’s dream the sun represented his father Jacob, and the moon his mother Rachel. The eleven stars were eleven sons of Jacob, and Joseph. Altogether twelve sons, also known as the twelve tribes of Israel.
Revelation 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
God called out a nation, a people, Israel. This nation was to bring forth the Messiah who would bless all nations. For this reason, Satan worked to thwart God’s plan, and Israel suffered the consequences. Thus, “travailing in birth.”
The identity of this man child is being revealed to us, in verse 5. He is Jesus Christ.
Revelation 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
Another “sign” appear in the sky, a great fiery red dragon. This is a moral description of Satan, a vile character. He is the mastermind behind a beast of an empire on earth. Seven heads and seven crowns, speaking of completeness.
A coalition of ten nations is being forged into an end time kingdom, for the Antichrist to rule. The citizens of this world, and their leaders, yielded their power to the dragon.
Note! Nebuchadnezzar in his dream, saw a statue that represents the kingdoms on this earth. The ten toes of this statue represented the last Empire. See Daniel 2.
Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew the third parts of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
Note! The Bible refers to angels often as stars, see Job 38:7, and Revelation 9:1, 7.
Satan’s last attempt to prevent this child, Jesus, to be born was him whispering in Herod’s ear. Matthew 2:16 “Herod… was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem… two years old and under.”
DRAGON VS MAN CHILD
Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: an her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
The male child, Jesus, to rule all nation with a rod of iron, was born. The promised seed, the Messiah to rule, came. He was “caught up unto God”, the day of the Ascension.
He has not yet ruled on earth, according to the promises, but it will happen. The Tribulation period will bring the changes necessary for the Messiah to rule.
Note! At this point, after verse 5, we jump from the Ascension of Jesus to His second coming. The Messiah coming to rule and reign on earth.
THE WOMAN IN THE WILDERNESS
Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and theescore days.
John uses the 1260 days to connect the readers with the half time of the seven year Tribulation. It is also known as 3.5 years.
Jesus himself spoke to his disciples about this moment at the end times. Matthew 24:16-17 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the housetop go down to take anything out of the house.” Satan is out to destroy Israel, but God himself will protect them.
Note! No one knows for sure, but many bible scholars believe this place of protection will be Petra, south of the Dead Sea.
WAR IN HEAVEN
Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8. And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Michael and his loyal angels fought, and overcame Satan and his squad of rebellious angels. These sore losers have no longer access to heaven. They are being kicked out, forever.
Note! Paul wrote about a “third heaven” in 2 Corinthians 12. Thus, there is a first and second heaven.
|1st Heaven||The sky |
We see it by day
|2nd Heaven||Outer space|
We see it by night
|3rd Heaven||Where Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father |
We see it by faith
SATAN KICKED OUT
Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
“Old/ancient” refers to the same serpent that deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden. He is persistent, and he still attempts to thwart Gods plan of the end time. He has no more place in heaven, and he is now ready to inhabit the Antichrist.
Note! Satan’s fall is great, in fact he will fall:
- from heaven to earth (Revelation 12)
- from the earth to the bottomless pit for 1,000 years (Revelation 20)
- from the pit to the lake of fire forever and ever (Revelation 20)
Revelation 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
The tiresome history of Satan’s accusations against humanity, has come to and end. Jesus Christ has always interceded for us, but now the great accuser is no more in heaven.
DRAGON VS GOD’S PEOPLE
Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
To overcome by the blood emphasizes the death of Jesus Christ.
Note! The blood of the Lam in spiritual warfare is not like garlic is being said to keep vampires away. It is about Jesus Christ on the cross, our substitute. Through His blood we overcome and reign.
Revelation 21:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Heaven rejoices, but Satan knows his time is running out. He fights like a cornered animal on earth.
Revelation 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
Satan touch ground, on earth, and starts running after Israel. His worst enemy, the nation that brought forth the Messiah.
Revelation 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Another great sign of an eagle appears. John in his writing, connects the reader here again with Daniel’s prophecy of “time, times, and a half.” That is 3.5 years, and the second half of the Tribulation period.
Note! God carried Israel before on eagle’s wings, during the Exodus. See Exodus 19:4 “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.”
“A FLOOD” OF FURY
Revelation 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.
Satan is angry, and in he is pouring out his fury against Israel. The concept of “a flood” likely represents armies.
GOD IS FAITHFUL
Revelation 12:16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
God is protecting Israel from the fury of Satan, according to prophecy. Isaiah 59:19 “When the enemy shall come in like a flood the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him.
Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
This continues the fierce persecution of those who would not submit to Satan. It includes most of Israel, but also the Gentiles who come to faith in Christ, during the Tribulation.
