THE SEVEN BOWLS OF GOD’S WRATH

Revelation 16 is all about seven bowls of God’s wrath. One after the other, seven angels went out and poured out a bowl of God’s judgment on earth.

Seven seals had already opened, and seven trumpets had blown before John brought us on a detour. The detour lasted from Revelation chapters 12-15, and it is over now.

The first two woe’s are done, and now the 3rd woe is here!

GO AND POUR OUT THE SEVEN BOWLS OF GOD’S WRATH

Verse 1: “And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.”

In the previous chapter, Revelation 15, God’s “shekinah glory” filled the Temple, and no one could enter. Then John heard a loud voice from the Temple; it was the Lord God who instructed the last seven judgments to be poured out on earth.

1st BOWL, SORES

Verse 2: “And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and upon them which worshipped his image.”

The first angel poured out his bowl upon the earth. The earth dwellers who were in cahoots with the Beast system and worshipped at the throne of the Beast were now breaking out in harmful and painful sores.

2nd BOWL, SALT WATER

Verse 3: “And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.”

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and the sea died. It became like the blood and fluids of a dead person, it changed color and it smelled sickening. Subsequently, every living thing in it died.

3rd BOWL, FRESH WATER

Verse 4: “And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood.”

The third angel poured out his bowl on all fresh water, and it became blood. Every tap ran blood, and not a drop of fresh water was left for human consumption.

GOD IS RIGHTEOUS AND JUST

Verse 5: “And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

The angel spoke and proclaimed God’s judgment was fair and appropriate. And those who had revelled in causing bloodshed will now find themselves drowning in it.

SO MUCH BLOOD

Verse 6: “For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy.”

God had sent saints and prophets to warn through the ages, and they would not listen. Instead, they often killed God’s holy people. Their blood is cried out to God for justice, and God remembered.

Genesis 4:10: “The Lord said, What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.”

NOTE!

My aim for this holy bible study is to steer clear of the sensational. But, I must mention here the dark and sinister acts to shed blood: the killings of believers through the ages, human sacrifice, child sacrifice, and the sacrifice of a foetus.

THE PERFECT JUDGE

Verse 7: “And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgements.”

Another voice confirmed that God is the only one who can judge the true and righteous. He is not a capricious God. He is long-suffering and slow to punish.

God does not delight in punishing people. He is willing to forgive. See blood covenant.

4th BOWL, HEAT

Verse 8: “And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire.”

The fourth angel poured out his bowl upon the sun, and the sun became so hot that it scorched the earth dwellers; the real climate change, if you’d like.

Peter wrote about this, too.

2 Peter 3:10: “…and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

BLASPHEMED GOD

Verse 9: “And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.”

It is astonishing that after all this divine discipline, men did not repent. They hardened their hearts and cursed God.

5th BOWL, DARK AND COLD

Verse 10: “And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain”

The fifth angel poured out his bowl upon the throne of the Beast. Darkness enveloped the earth, bringing with it an icy chill, and not a single ray of sunshine pierced through.

NO REPENTANCE

Verse 11: “And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.”

The last seven plagues aren’t dished out one by one. Instead, they’re like a relentless barrage of troubles, each piling on top of the last one. So, just as the earth dwellers grapple with one bowl judgement, the next comes crashing down on them.

And they repent not but hardened their hearts against God.

6th BOWL, EUPHRATES RIVER DRIED UP

Verse 12: “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

The sixth angel poured out his bowl into the Euphrates River, which dried up. The Romans once considered it a secure barrier between the West and the East.

UNHOLY TRINITY

Verse 13: “And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet.”

The pseudo-Trinity appeared with three impure spirits coming out of their mouths, and each one spoke deception:

  • the mouth of the dragon (Satan)
  • mouth of the Beast (Antichrist)
  • mouth of the false prophet (unholy spirit)

DEMONIC SPIRITS

Verse 14: “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of the great day of God Almighty.”

The demonic spirits have already deceived the leaders of the East (see verses 12-13). Now, they are going to work to deceive the leaders of the rest of the world. This battle is not nation against nation but rather the united nations of the whole world against, yes, Lord God almighty.

THE ROBE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

Verse 15: “Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.”

The robe of righteousness is the garment of believers in Christ, the one washed in the blood of the Lamb. Believers who expected and prepared for the second coming were not surprised.

NAKED INTO BATTLE

Verse 16: “And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.”

Those deceived were gathered for the battle at Armageddon, the valley of Megiddo.

7th BOWL, LAST PLAGUE

Verse 17: “And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.”

The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air after a mighty shout came out of the Temple.

NOTE!

God’s words, “It is done,” evoke Jesus’ last words at the cross: “It is finished.”

God's Famous Last Words

AN EARTHQUAKE

Verse 18: “And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

The grand finale, the seventh bowl judgment, brought thunder, lightning, and a mother of all earthquakes.

Verse 19:  “And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.”

The great city refers to Jerusalem; it broke into three parts, and the nations’ cities fell. John wrote how God remembered Babylon, her cup filled, and the Lord God deals with it in chapters 17 and 18.

Verse 20:  “And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”

The prophet Isaiah wrote: “Every mountain and hill shall be made low.” See Isiah 40:4.

HAIL

Verse 21: “And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphmemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague whereof was exeeding great.”

Then, out of the sky, huge hailstones of about a hundred pounds each pummelled down on earth.

ADDENDUM

Revelation 16 is the settling of “the tale of the two cities”, Jerusalem and Babylon.
