Revelation, Chapter 18

This is part of a study on the book of Revelation

Revelation 18 is John describing his vision of the fall of a political/commercial Babylon on earth.

RELIGION FELL, NOW POLITICS

The Babylon of chapter 17 was the religious arm of the Beast system, referred to as “the harlot.” She was associated with the political/commercial system. Yet, was distinctively different. Its judgment falls, most probably, in the middle of the Tribulation period.

The Babylon of chapter 18 is the political/commercial arm of the Beast system. John refers to it as “the city.” It falls at the end of the Tribulation period.

Religion, politics, and commerce has melted into one powerful system, the One World Order. God judged them one after the other.

VERSE BY VERSE

AFTER THIS

Revelation 18:1 And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.

This verse starts with “after this” which separates it from the previous Chapter 17 events. John described an incredible illuminating being, coming down from heaven. Earth was a pretty “dark place” in the end times.

DEVILS AND DEMONS

Revelation 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

The phrase “Babylon is fallen, fallen” is being repeated like a solemn pledge. That city became the hideout for every foul and evil spirit, it is satanic. It is Luciferianism.

Note! Birds are an analogy for demonic activity in the Bible. See Matthew 13:4: “and the birds came and ate it up,” referring to Satan stealing God’s word.

CORRUPTED AND RICH

Revelation 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

The world leaders became corrupted, accepted bribes, and did evil with her. She lured in the merchants too, and they grew abundant in wealth and luxury. She had beguiled them all to forsake the true God, and took part in wicked practices.

COME OUT

Revelation 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

A loving warning to us who read this today. Practise separation from the spirit of the world, and do not have fellowship with her.

John saw her judgment, and those who were in her, were judged with her.

Revelation 18:5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.

When people ask: “why does God not doing something about it?” He is coming soon to put it right. John saw, God Himself judged her, and she got a double dose of what she did to others.

PRIDE COMES TO A FALL

Revelation 18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

She had an exalted opinion of herself, saw herself as a queen, and lavished herself with luxuries. But, her pride came before her downfall.

DESTRUCTION IN ONE DAY

Revelation 18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

God destroyed this city, Babylon, in one hour with fire. This parallels the day when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, with brimstone and fire.

Note! Isaiah wrote in the Old Testament a prophecy about the downfall of Babylon. Isaiah 13:19 “Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory of the Babylonians’ pride, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.”

STANDING AFAR, AND MOURN

Revelation 18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning. 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come.

The political leaders delighted in the fall of religious Babylon, see Revelation, Chapter 17. Not for a moment did they think that they too will be judged by God, one day. Shocked and sad they watched the sudden destruction of Babylon, while keeping a safe distance.

COMMERCE CEASES

Revelation 18:11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

The whole commerce system came tumbling down in, one day. Thus the merchants wept, because no one bought and sold their merchandise anymore.

MERCHANDISE

Revelation 18:12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, 13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and charitiots, and slaves, and souls of men.

John listed the merchandise of the merchants here. The New International Version ends the list with “and human beings sold as slaves.” John saw, human trafficking were rampant at the end of the age. People were treated like merchandise.

WEEPING AND WAILING

Revelation 18:14 And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,

When God judged the merchants, they lost all the fine and dainty goodies that the people lusted after. Those who use to sold it and bought it, stood empty handed. It was all gone.

RESENTMENT

Revelation 18:16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! 17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! 19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.

In this chapter, the words “for in one hour” repeats itself. This destruction of political/commercial Babylon happened very sudden, and very quick.
They were deeply distressed to see their lifestyle coming to an end.

They resented the change, the end of their One World Order, and the coming of the promised Millennial kingdom.

HEAVEN REJOICES

Revelation 18:20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

In chapter 17 the kings rejoiced over the fall of religious Babylon. Now, heaven rejoiced over the fall of political/commercial Babylon. John saw the heavenly beings were waiting for God to do something about it, and He did.

CATACLYSMIC EVENT

Revelation 18:21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

An angel picked up a big bolder, causing a cataclismic event, to bring an end to Babylon.

Note! Jeremiah wrote a prophecy about this moment in time. Jeremiah 51:60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll about all the disasters that would come upon Babylon—all that had been recorded concerning Babylon.  61 He said to Seraiah, “When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud.  62 Then say, ‘Lord, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither people nor animals will live in it; it will be desolate forever.’  63 When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates.  64 Then say, ‘So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring on her. And her people will fall.’

NO MORE

Revelation 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;

No more music, for joy and happiness was no more. The creating and making of crafts had come to an end. And, the grinding of the millstones came to and end too, their was no more food.

Revelation 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.

The lights went out forever, it was dark on earth. No one fell in love, and no one married.

The word “sorcery” comes from the Greek word “pharmakeia.” Most likely, drug abuse is part of the end time manipulation of people.

AVENGE

Revelation 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Babylon never had tolerance for God’s people, and they were murdered throughout history. John saw in his vision, one last attempt to rid the earth of those who trusted in the Lamb of God.

Tribulation saints were killed for their faith, and for refusing to bow to the Antichirst. The destruction of Babylon will avenge, and bring and end to it.

The End.
