Revelation, Chapter 14

This is part of a study on the book of Revelation.

A VIEW OF WHAT IS COMING

Revelation 14, John saw an interesting vision. It is a general view of what is coming. It is a prelude to the last seven judgements, the vials.

Note! We often find this in the Bible, a general view, and then zooming in. This is happening here, we get to see a general view here. In the next chapter we will zoom in again.

It is the last chapter of this parenthesis:

  • Chapter 11 – The two Witnesses
  • Chapter 12 – The signs in the Sky
  • Chapter 13 – The signs on Earth
  • Chapter 14 – A view of the Future

Chronological we are about midway through the Tribulation. It is a last call!

VERSE BY VERSE

THE LAMB ON MOUNT ZION

Revelation 14:1 And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him a hundred forty and four thousand having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.

“I looked, and, lo”, this is John looking at a general view of what is coming. This scene is not the enthronement of the Lamb. It is the continuing deliverance of God’s people on earth, by the blood of the Lamb.

The 144,000 is the same number we saw at the beginning of the Tribulation, in Revelation 7. Not one is missing! They went out to evangelise, and the beast did not defeat them, because they received God’s seal on their foreheads.

Note! We learn here how the 144,000 were sealed, the Father’s name were written on their foreheads. Satan counterfeits what God does, and he has a “mark of the beast.”

Mount Zion is in Jerusalem. It is the place where Jesus Christ, the Messiah, will stand when he comes again. Zechariah 14:4 “On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives.” And, also Joel 2:32 “….for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

VOICES AND HARPS

Revelation 14:2 And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

What John saw was on earth, but the sound of voices and harps was coming from above.

John heard the “voice of many waters” in Revelation 1:15 too. It sounded like a waterfall. And, he heard the “voice of loud thunder” like before, in Revelation 4:5. Now, he hears the beautiful sound “of harpers harping their harps.”

The song is unique to the 144,000, because of their experiences on the earth during the Tribulation. God raised and sealed them for a very unique ministry. It is their ministry, and their song, only.

IDOLATRY

Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whitersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the first fruits unto god and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

The passage “not defiled with women” is speaking of idolatry. Dr Baruch Korman gives a very credible explanation. He says: “Though John wrote in the Greek language, like all the other New Testament writers, he had a Jewish mindset.”

Note! God called Israel an “adulterous wife” and a “prostitute” when they looked at “other gods.” Ezekiel 16:32 “You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 35″…. you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord!”

They were blameless, because they devoted themselves to the Lamb, Jesus Christ, alone. They called on Christ, and they were not seduced by other deities. This made them without fault before the throne of God.

First fruits, because Jesus Christ was the first fruits when he raised from the grave. They identified with the Lamb, as they died and raised in Christ. The same Gospel that save the Church, will save every one that come to believe during the Tribulation.

GOD THE CREATOR

Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, 7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

An angel, flew through the air, and preached the Gospel to the earth dwellers. It is a last call!

“Fear God” is not the same as fearing a snake or bees. It is to recognise God as the creator of heaven and earth, and to submit to Him.

Note! It is important to God that we acknowledge Him as creator. Many problems stem from this basic disbelief. Paul wrote in Romans 1:20-21 “For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.” (New Living Translation)

BABYLON IS FALLING

Revelation 14:8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

John saw a second angel. He made a proclamation against the fountain head of false religions, Babylon. It was here that the worship of the female deity, Semi-ramis, was born. Many people, through the centuries, have been deceived into this.

“Fornication” is idolatry, it refers to spiritual fornication. That is to share the glory, and worship, that belongs to God only with others. Those who are lead into idolatry, will experience the wrath of a jealous God.

Note! Satan was behind the original Babylon, and Satan is behind the mystical Babylon. He always wanted the glory and worship that belongs to God only, even if he has to deceive people into it.

THE MARK OF THE BEAST

Revelation 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

John saw a third angel. He gave a solemn warning to those who took the “mark of the beast” that they have no more hope of salvation. It is a clear decision to reject God, even if it looks like an innocent act of civic duty.

The Greek for “wrath” is “thymos”, and it means “passionate anger.” Those who receive the “mark of the beast” will experience the wrath of God. Hell is real, and torment is forever, and ever.

Note! Jesus took the cup of the Father’s wrath, that we deserved, at the cross. Those who reject Jesus Christ as their Savior, will drink the cup of wrath themselves.

TRIBULATION SAINTS

Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord form henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

The saints here refer to the Tribulation saints. Those who come to believe in Jesus Christ, after the rapture of the Church. They will pay with their lives, but their patience will pay off.

HARVESTING

Revelation 14:14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

This “one” on the white cloud is Jesus Christ. He is ready to lay in with a sharp sickle, to gather the harvest.

Note! Bible scholars differ about the identity. But, in the Bible a white cloud is associated with the Shekinah presence of the Lord. In Exodus 13 we read about the cloud that guide Israel through the desert. And, in Numbers 9 we read about the cloud that covered the tabernacle. Finally, it departs in Ezekiel 9-11.

The Greek “ripe” here has a negative sense. It is like something that is over-ripe. It is late.

WINE PRESSING

Revelation 14:17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the treat winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

This angel came to harvest for the wrath of God. It is the great winepress, and it speaks of the wrath of God when He deals with their sins. Like ripe grapes release their juice from under the feet of those treading, their blood will spurt out under God’s wrath.

Note! We read a prophecy about this in Jeremiah 25:30 “The LORD will roar from on high; he will thunder from his holy dwelling and roar mightily against his land. He will shout like those who tread the grapes, shout against all who live on the earth.

CONCLUSION

In Revelation 19, at the battle of Armageddon, blood splatters up to the horses bridles. This is the moment when Jesus Christ, returns to earth as the Lion of Judah. Mentioned here, and much more about this battle later.
