THE SCROLL WITH SEVEN SEALS
Jesus Christ called John up to heaven in Revelation, Chapter 4, and he is still here in Chapter 5.
Jesus Christ until now was sitting at the right hand of God. But now, He is getting up to fulfil God’s plan and purposes.
THE BOOK OF RUTH
To understand Chapter 5 of the book of Revelation, one has to understand the book of Ruth. It elucidates the “Law of Redemption” and the “Law of Levirate Marriage.” Also, the role of a “Kinsman Redeemer.”
Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer. Why?
- Jesus became one of us, a worthy kinsman
- Jesus was able to redeem the land
- Jesus was willing to marry the Gentile bride
- Jesus will come to judge the blood of the innocent
Here in Chapter 5, our Kinsman Redeemer is getting up to take the scroll, to unroll the judgement of God. See more Ruth and Naomi
VERSE BY VERSE
Revelation 5:1 “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals.”
God is holding in His hand a book, in ancient times, a scroll. It had seven seals, and writing on both sides. The one to open the scroll, is the one who complies with the writing on the outside. If you will, the title-deed to the earth.
It contains the first seven successive steps by which Jesus Christ will recover it from its usurper. The kingdom is already “purchased” for Himself, and His elect saints.
Ezekiel too saw a scroll with writing inside and outside. And, the judgments indicated by the lamentation, mourning, and woe. Ezekiel 2:9-10 “And when I looked, behold, a hand was put forth unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein. And he spread it before me: and it was written within and without; and there were written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe.”
THE ONE WORTHY TO OPEN IT
Revelation 5:2 “And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof?”
A problem arises. Who is worthy to open this scroll?
Note! Adam, the first man, forfeited the title deed to the earth. This happened in the Garden of Eden when Satan deceived Adam and Eve. The one able to take it back has to be one of us, a kinsman of Adam. Jesus, the second Adam, purchased it and took the title deed. He is getting ready to unroll the scroll, and to unroll judgment, in order to take what He paid for.
Revelation 5:3-4 “And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.”
The Greek implies that John sobbed convulsively. It is a tragedy! No man was worthy to take back what Adam forfeited to Satan. John knows what is at stake, and he becomes very upset at this stage.
THE LION, JESUS CHRIST
Revelation 5:5 “And one of the elder saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.”
One of the elders is comforting John, telling him not to despair for there is hope. Jesus Christ has prevailed. He is the one that is 100% man and 100% God. He is “the man” worthy to open the scroll with the seven seals.
The title “the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David” refers to the Davidic covenant. God promised David that one day one will come from his tribe, Judah, to rule over the earth.
THE LAMB, JESUS CHRIST
Revelation 5:6 “And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”
We see the four “living creatures/beings” and the Church, and in the middle Jesus Christ is standing. He came the first time as a Lamb to do the redemption work. But now, He is getting ready for the “second coming.” This time He come as a Lion to judge.
Note! All the different titles of Jesus up to here are non-Jewish, but from here onwards they are Jewish. The Church is in heave, and God is dealing with Israel, and those who reject the Gospel on earth.
Revelation 5:7-8 “And he came and took the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.”
Jesus Christ is the one worthy to break the seals, and to open the scroll. The Church, and heavenly beings unite now in praise to God for He is worthy.
Revelation 5:9 “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation”
The only ones redeemed by the blood of Christ is the Church. He has done the redemption work at the cross. They are in heaven since they have been raptured into heaven.
Revelation 5:10 “And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
There are only three beings in the Bible referred to as both king and priest: Melchizedek, Jesus Christ, and the Church. Further confirmation that the Church is in heaven at this stage.
Note! We find scale models of bigger things embedded in the Old Testament.
Right before the the southern two tribes were going into captivity, God told Jeremiah to buy land. God wanted him to know that he will be back, and the land will be his, one day. At that point, Jeremiah can dig up the clay vessel with the the scroll and take the title deed to the land.
This models the story of the earth, and the justified owner coming back for it, one day.
Jeremiah 32:6-14 Jeremiah said, “The word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Behold, Hanameel the son of Shaullum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that is in Anathoth: for the right of redemption is thine to buy it.
So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prision according to the word of the Lord, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the redemption is thine; buy it for thyself. Then I knew that this was the word of the Lord.
And I bougth the field of Hanameel mu uncle’s son, that was in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed it, and took witnesses, and weighed him the money in the balances.
So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open
And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle’s son, and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.
And I charged Baruch before them, saying, Thus saith the lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Take these evidences, this evidence of the purchase, both which is sealed, and this evidence which is open; and put them in an earthen vessel, that they may continue many days.
For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land.
I say, the more I see Jesus unveiled, the more I understand of How worthy He is of our worship.
