Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shallbruise (wound) his heel.
God declared enmity, that is a blood feud. It runs like a golden thread through the bible, involving a cycle of retaliatory killings. This feud began here in Genesis 3.
When we learn about the bees and the birds, we learn that women have eggs and men have seed. This is the prophecy of a virgin that one day will give birth to the Messiah. God promised a man child will be born that will give Satan a fatal blow. In this battle the serpent will hurt the Messiah, but His foot will come down on the head of the serpent and crush it.
Satan heard it and trembled. He made up his mind not to ever let this Seed come to the world. Soon after, we read about Cain who killed his brother Abel. How do we know that satan was behind it? John told us in 1 John 3:12 “Not as Cain who was of the wicked one.”
Satan thought, maybe Cain is the promised Seed. Maybe the promised one to crush my head will come from him. I will nip it in the bud! God’s plan was not frustrated. In Genesis 4, another son was born to Adam and Eve. His name was Seth, it means “substitute”.
THE HOLY LINE
Satan learned God is preparing a holy line, a lineage, from which this seed will come. These men, Abel and Seth, are only the preliminary seeds. He started his second method to thwart God’s plan, to contaminate this lineage.
Genesis 6:1-2 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
The “sons of God” refers to fallen angels that left their habitat to co-mingle with humanity. Their offspring were huge, giant-like beings, that threatened humanity. They taught people evil things, and the human race became increasingly wicked. Thus, God sent the flood to rescue a remnant.
The flood happened about 1500 years after Adam. Natural resources was abundant, and people lived long. There would have been millions of people on the earth. Yet, only eight humans were in the Arc. God saved the human race just in time.
God was working to bring the promised Seed, and Satan was working to keep it from coming.
NATION AGAINST NATION
Genesis 10:1 Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. God started afresh with a small family. From these three sons all nations came.
TOWER OF BABEL
In Genesis 11, we read all the nations came together to build a tower that reached into the heaven. They worshipped idols, and they united against God. This is where Abraham lived, and God called him out.
The devil did not hate Israel, but the promised Seed that would come through them. The One that would come to crush his head. Satan wants self preservation, and he sets out to prevent his own destruction.
God promised Abraham and Sarah a child. Satan noticed and went to work to contaminate the seed. Genesis 16:2 So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.
The child from Hagar (the maid) is born, and he is called Ishmael. Sarah too has a child, called Isaac. The animosity was tangible, and Ishmael was send away.
Isaac had twins. Genesis 27:41 Esau said in his heart “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” Jacob fled for his life.
Jacob had twelve sons, the origin of the twelve tribes of Israel. Genesis 49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah. The promised seed would come through the line of Judah.
Satan took note and went to work to starve them all in a famine. God prepared the way for them to overcame through Joseph. Genesis 45:5-7 But now, do not therefore be grieved nor angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years…. God sent me before you to…. save your lives.
By now you get the picture of the Blood Feud in the Bible. Looking at scripture through these lenses, and you will see satan falling over himself to stop the promised Seed from coming. More times, and more plans here:
- Pharaoh enslaved Israel and refuse them to leave Egypt.
- The huge Canaanites are waiting for the Israelites, in the promised land.
- Saul tried to kill David when he is under the influence of an evil spirit.
- Salomon is enticed into idolatry by his foreign wives.
- Israel was in Babylonian captivity for seventy years.
- Israel was send back to Israel after the captivity, and we read:
Ezra 9:2 For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed is mixed with the peoples of those lands.
- Haman conspire to have all Israel killed in the time of Esther, and on and on it goes.
PROMISED SEED ARRIVED
BIRTH OF JESUS
Galatians 4:4 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman.” The promised Seed, arrived at the right time, according to God’s plan.
Satan had a knee jerk reaction, and inspired Herod to kill all the children under two years old. Matthew 2:16 Herod… he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under.
This too did not prevent God from fulfilling His promise. The promise that was made in Genesis 3:15. Jesus Christ was wounded at the cross, but He raised after three days.
Satan’s head was crushed. We read Colossians 2:15 “And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”
